Divine Union

“Kundalini Yoga is considered the most powerful yoga, combining meditation, prayer, physical practices and breathing exercises. “Kundalini” means “the curl of the lock of hair of the beloved.” This poetic metaphor alludes to the flow of energy and consciousness that exists within each of us, and enables us to merge with the universal Self. Fusing individual and universal consciousness creates a divine union, called “yoga.”

The Upanishads, Hindu’s sacred scriptures that date back to the fifth century B.C., describe Kundalini, although the oral tradition reaches back even further into history. For thousands of years, this sacred science and technology was veiled in secrecy, passed along verbally from master to chosen disciple. Yogi Bhajan broke with this long-held tradition of silence. A master of Kundalini by the age of 16 he held his first class at a Los Angeles high school gym on January 5, 1969. In the turbulent, drug culture of the 60s, Bhajan first reached out to the youth. He recognized their experimentation with drugs and “altered states of consciousness” expressed a deeper desire to experience a holistic, liberating sense of awareness. Soon realizing that pharmaceuticals provided, at best, a cheap imitation to the peaceful, inner euphoria they could get naturally from Kundalini, and at worst, had debilitating physical and mental side effects, young people began flocking to his classes, arriving by the busloads. Soon 3HO teaching centers began springing up across the United States and then throughout the world. He sparked a movement whose many tendrils have wound their way into our culture. Through 3HO, Yogi Bhajan blazed a trail. Today, after more than 30 years of determined effort on the part of this organization and others, yoga and meditation have gained widespread acceptance in the West. Witness the frequent feature articles that grace the covers of such publications as Time, Newsweek and The Wall Street Journal. This popular attention speaks not only to the proven benefits of yoga and meditation, but to the increasing public interest in spirituality and a healthy diet.”

FAQ Kundalini Yoga

What is Kundalini?

Kundalini is the creative energy within. The whole cosmos of energy in the individual and beyond the individual. It is the energy of consciousness. Without the constant flow of energy you could not live. With a large flow your mind begins to awaken. You stop living in imaginary realities and you become to feel the real joy of this life. According to yogis Kundalini is coiled up like a snake at the base of the spine. When Kundalini is awakened through the practice of yoga, it rises. This is called the Kundalini Rising.

Who brought Kundalini to the West?

Kundalini Yoga was maintained as a secret oral tradition for thousands of years, but thanks to Yogi Bhajan, the first to bring Kundalini Yoga to the West (in 1969), we are so fortunate to work on ourselves, to connect to the Infinity, to experience the beauty of our Soul. Yogi Bhajan is a Master of Kundalini Yoga, a Mahan Tantric, a remarcable man who's leadership set a standart of excellence and inspired thousands of people all over the world. He left his physical body in 2004, but his guidance and support are stronger then ever, his teachings live through his students and change lives of millions. You can be one of these light warriors and you can make a huge difference in the world. Just keep your meditation and yoga practice!

What is the most important in Kundalini Yoga?

In Kundalini Yoga the most important thing is your experience. It goes right to your heart. No words can replace that experience!

How Kundalini Yoga can help you?

There is nothing more powerful and faster then Kundalini Yoga to awaken your consciousness, to confront your ego and to drop your fears. There is nothing better to build the strength of the nervous system and character. There is nothing more effective to develop the happy state in the midst of challenge, and to be greateful each moment of life.

What is the difference between Kundalini Yoga and other schools of yoga?

The difference is only in matter of time and rate of progress. Kundalini Yoga is the most powerful of the twenty-two schools of yoga, all of which are beneficial. The ancient Yoga Sutras (writings) say that what you can achieve in 12 years of Hatha Yoga, plus 6 years of Raj Yoga, plus 3 years of Mantra Yoga, plus 1 year of Laya Yoga, can be accomplished in a single year of perfectly practiced Kundalini Yoga.

Can anyone practice Kundalini Yoga?

Yes, Kundalini Yoga can be practiced by anyone if it is done gradually and according to the instructions. There is never a problem with Kundalini Yoga taught as the original sacred science. Kundalini Yoga produces whole human beings, teachers and yogis. A yogi is one who has a union with the supreme consciousness. To teach yoga you must have sufficient experience and practical knowledge of the technology. If you are a beginner in Kundalini Yoga look for a teacher that is trained by K.R.I. as taught by Yogi Bhajan.

Do I need to live in India, because I pracice Kundalini Yoga?

No, Kundalini Yoga is designed for the active person with responsibilities in school, work, family and in the world.

I am a beginner, what I need to know about my practice?

As a beginning student you should go at a pace that suits your flexibility and endurance. As you feel more comfortable with the exercises taught in class, begin to practice at home. If you can practice at the same time each day, you will find that you will improve rapidly. Try to take 2-3 kundalini yoga classes a week and at least one workshop a month to establish a firm foundation for an effective program that fits your needs, goals, capacity and lifestyle.

What to bring to class?

Wear loose clothes, preferably white color from cotton or other natural fiber material. Bring a mat, water, a small pillow and a light blanket (at the meditation and relaxation at the end of the class the body cools down). The most important is to bring your HAPPY SPIRIT!

Why my teacher is wearing a white hat?

For protection. In Kundalini Yoga we move a huge amount of energy and the white hat protects her/him, helps her/him to hold the space for you, the student. The teacher wears white clothes because white is a combination of every color. All colors blending together turn into white. And once you start wearing white you start loving wearing white. It’s so pure in its serenity. White color also doesn't absorb negative energy.

Breathing Techniques.

What is Mantra?

A scientific way of using a sound current to create a specific state of consiousness.

Why do we chant mantras in Kundalini Yoga?

Chanting mantras, either silently or laud, is a conscious method of controlling and directing the mind. Happiness, sorrow, joy, and regret are vibratory frequencies of the mind. We are creating with every word we speak, with every word we think. When we chant a mantra we are choosing to invoke the positive power contained in these particular syllables. Wheather is for prosperity, peace of mind, increasing intuition, simply by chanting the mantras we are setting vibrations into our motion that shall have an effect. It doesn't matter if we understand the meaning of the sound or not.

Why Mantras work?

There are 84 meridians points located on the hard palate of the roof of the mouth. The movement of each part of the tongue stimulates these meridian points. The points are like a keyboard input to a computer. The computer is located in the hypothalamus area of the brain. It receives the impulses from the repetition of the patterns of sound in the Shabd. This is translated into instructions that regulate chemical messengers that go to all vital areas of the brain and body. The hypothalamus lies just bellow the thalamus in the middle of the brain. It is connected by blood vessels to the pituitary gland, the master gland of the body. The hypothalamus is known to regulate vital functions like hunger, drinking, body temperature and sleep. It also trigers the regulations of moods, emotional behavior and sexuality. The special patterns of the mantra stimulate the hypothalamus to change the chemistry of the brain. This ajusts the functions of the endocrine system and the metabolism to create a neutral ballanced mind, and to strengthen the immune function. Many positive states of the mind can be created using the Shabd Guru. It can conquer depression, enhance intelligence and intuition, and open the power of compassion.

The late Siri Singh Sahib Bhai Sahib Harbhajan Singh Khalsa Yogiji, also known as Yogi Bhajan, was honored May 11th 2005 at a special reception at the US Capitol in Washington DC. It commemorated last month's unanimous passage of a bipartisan Congressional Resolution honoring his life and influence. US Senators and Representatives, members of the US Department of State, representatives from the Government of India, dignitaries, officials, and members of the Sikh faith attended the event.

In the history of the US Congress, only a handful of spiritual leaders have ever inspired a Joint Resolution honoring their life and work. They include Martin Luther King Jr., Pope John Paul II and Mother Theresa.

The current Congressional Resolution passed by the US House of Representatives and the US Senate supporting the event read, in part:

"The (US) Congress recognizes that the teachings of Yogi Bhajan about Sikhism and yoga, and the businesses formed under his inspiration, improved the personal, political, spiritual, and professional relations between citizens of the United States and the citizens of India, recognizes the legendary compassion, wisdom, kindness, and courage of Yogi Bhajan, and his wealth of accomplishments on behalf of the Sikh community, and extends its condolences to Inderjit Kaur, the wife of Yogi Bhajan, his three children and five grandchildren, and to Sikh and 3HO (Healthy, Happy, Holy) communities around the Nation and the world upon the death on October 6, 2004, of Yogi Bhajan, an individual who was a wise teacher and mentor, an outstanding pioneer, a champion of peace, and a compassionate human being.

Yogi Bhajan spent his life teaching and improving the lives of thousands through his teachings on yoga and Sikh Dharma. It was through his efforts that Sikh Dharma became a tax exempt, recognized religion in the United States. He also founded the 3HO (Healthy, Happy, Holy) organization and a successful drug rehabilitation program to address the national crisis of drug addiction.

More than 100 officials and dignitaries attended the event including US Senator Jeff Bingaman, US Representative Tom Udall, US Representative Joe Wilson, US Representative Thad McCotter, US Representative Sheila Jackson Lee, Deputy Chief of Missions of the Embassy of India Ambassador Raminder Singh Jassal, Minister Counselor of the Embassy of India Krishan Varma, former US Secretary of Interior Manuel Lujan, World Bank Representative Gurcharan Singh, former US Secretary of Interior Stewart Udall, former First Lady of New Mexico Clara Apadoca, and many others.
